Saturday evening, Juliet sat on her bedroom balcony, drinking Limoncello to calm her nerves. No, she wasnât tense because she was going to break into DâAngeloâs house in another hour. She was edgy because sheâd spent too long at the bridal party meeting that morning and afternoon.
Roseline had told the group of women that she was already getting headaches and having tummy issues because of the stress.
Maybe she wasnât marrying the right guy was Julietâs first thought. Then Roseline confessed that she was so nervous because she feared some of the bridesmaids wouldnât be able to fit into the dresses in February. âPeople gain weight during the holidays,â sheâd told them. âPlease stay away from sweets this Christmas.â
Juliet had also discovered that the groomsmen would wear kilts at the ceremony. âIs Dexter Scottish?â sheâd asked. Dexter sounded German to her.
âItâs an English name,â one of the girls had answered.
âSo itâs not Scottish. Whatâs with the kilts?â
Thatâs when Roseline lost her ish.
Juliet drank the last of the liqueur and gazed at her phone. The battery was fully charged.
Excellent.
She peered at the horizon. Only the sunâs halo was left in the sky. The wind off the lake was up and whipping frigid air around the corner of the house.
Standing, she went back into her bedroom. It was time to dress. Sheâd already laid out her clothes on the bed: black pants, black sweater, black gloves, and shoes. She still needed one thing and went to the dresser to find her black ski cap and face covering. She left the face covering off for the time being and stuffed it hard into her pocket. The thing reminded her too much of her motherâs nagging about the upcoming ski trip. Juliet didnât need her mother directing her social life, for heavenâs sake. Wasnât breaking and entering a home with her cousin convivial enough?
Juliet stepped out of the room.
Paris stepped out of his room at nearly the same moment. He was dressed in a pale green sweater and jeans. The knit fit over his square shoulders and then hung off his trim body quite nicely, but it wasnât something he should wear while breaking into a house. He asked, âWhy are you dressed like a cartoon bandit?â
Julietâs shoulders went limp. âI told you. Weâre breaking into DâAngeloâs house.â
âThatâs illegal, Juliet.â
She threw out her hand. âIâm not happy about it.â
âIâm not sure I believe you.â
âI donât know when you started to believe such horrible things about me, Paris Nobleman. First, Iâm trying to sabotage your house hunt and now Iâm a happy burglar skipping off to work.â
How she hated a man who laughed uproariously.
She left Paris in the hallway and made for the stairs.
He caught up with her. âAnd if you get caught?â
âIâm not going to get caught. Iâm going about this professionally.â
âYes, yes, Ty is helping you.â
They made it to the first landing, and Juliet turned on him. âHeâs not just a dancer. Heâs broken into houses.â
Paris leaned toward her, practically nose-to-nose. âHow many?â
âEr, one.
